Erin, 3 years old, was diagnosed
with a brain tumor. After surgery, her parents had to choose
from two forms of chemotherapy: one already available and
a newer one only available through a “clinical trial”. Her
parents went onto the Internet to look for information on
these treatments but found the information inconsistent, confusing
and they were unsure of its accuracy.

CMR sent Erin’s parents a
current, comprehensive research report on this kind of brain
cancer and the treatment options available. This information
included up to date information on the chemotherapy currently
available and the clinical trial. The clinical trials information
included success rates and side effects of the new drug and
how it compared with the other chemotherapy.

After reading the report
and discussing it with their doctor, Erin’s parents chose
the clinical trial because the preliminary data showed it
was superior to the older treatment in that it had fewer side
effects and was more effective. Erin’s parents feel they
made an informed choice and the best decision possible.
